Pre-Production
Every great track starts with a great plan
Often an overlooked step, pre-production gives us a chance to assess the song's tempo, key, arrangement and instrumentation to identify the best way to present the tune. This process will help to solidify the intention of the song and inform decisions later in the recording process.
Tracking
Laying it down
Tracking is the guts of the recording process. Special care is taken here to ensure we are capturing the strongest performances and tonal qualities. This is typically done one instrument at a time, however some songs benefit greatly from 'live' tracking, where the band records their parts simultaneously.
Mixing
Putting it all together
All the best parts from tracking will fall into place here. Volume, equalisation, compression, tone, editing and fx are all committed at this stage. I usually work alone to construct this - and then provide drafts to the artist for critique. This phase can make or break the song. I use professional level software, plugins and hardware processing to create a high quality and high fidelity mix.
Mastering
The final touch
Once all the creative choices have concluded, all of our seperate tracks get summed into one file, which will then get a surgical like treatment to make it playback consistently across all devices and speakers. This is where the track gets it's loudness and is exported in appropriate formats for digital distribution, including Triple J Unearthed.
